After Benefiting From Voter Furor Over Economy, Conservatives Prioritize Divisive Social Agenda in States | Progressive States Network
The morning after Election Day, conservative candidates across the country woke up to find themselves the beneficiaries of an historic national wave of voter anger over the state of the economy and record unemployment. Exit polls and other surveys unanimously showed that jobs and the economy were by far the primary issues on voters’ minds as they cast their ballots - while they simultaneously revealed no mandate for a conservative economic agenda that would hurt working families.
Yet in the first few weeks after this clear voter statement of frustration over the economy, conservative state lawmakers across the fifty states are already making it clear that their legislative priorities next year will include pushing a divisive social agenda - an agenda that remained largely hidden during the campaign.
Chief among the fights soon to take center stage in many statehouses will be a renewed right-wing attack on reproductive rights. Troy Newman, the leader of the notorious anti-choice group Operation Rescue, recently described the post-election outlook for social conservatives in the states by saying it made him feel like “a little boy on Christmas morning - which package do you open up first?”

American Principles Project claims CPAC reconsidering GOProud attendance

Some social conservatives still confident their agenda can now move ahead

". . . According to a recent poll, only 18 percent of tea partiers support gay marriage, a figure that puts them well to the right of most voters. About half of all tea partiers also consider themselves part of the Christian conservative movement, whose members aren't fans of GOProud. Earlier this year, several evangelical groups went so far as to boycott the annual Conservative Political Action Conference simply because GOProud was allowed to sponsor a small table in the exhibit hall.
The tensions within the Tea Party Patriots are a microcosm of those roiling the movement as a whole. Even as one faction of the group is now calling for social issues to be left to the family and the church, another is actively courting social conservatives. In September, for instance, members of the group's national leadership attended a meeting of high-powered social conservatives in California, attempting to hit them up for donations. . . "

Conservatives hope for gay marriage ban in N.C. :: WRAL.comThe economy dominated the fall campaign, but leaders among North Carolina's social conservatives believe the Republican sweep at the Legislature should finally permit a vote on a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.
North Carolina is the only state in the Southeast that hasn't approved an amendment restricting marriage to one man and one woman. Democratic leadership in the Legislature have refused to consider GOP-penned bills on the issue for several years, and gay rights organizations have offered strong opposition to what it called imprinting discrimination permanently into state law.
Now with Republicans solidly in the majority in the General Assembly starting this January for the first time in more than a century, chances for a vote in the House and Senate are fairly strong, GOP lawmakers said.
