Cornell Law Professor Rebukes SPLC

Southern Poverty Law CenterImage by ianloic via Flickr

"The SPLC is very, very close to its "jump the shark" moment. They're close to going out of bounds."~ comment at Legal Insurrection website

Does taking the position that “Gays and Lesbians have a right to live as they choose ... [but] they don’t have the right to redefine marriage for all of us,” really constitute hate speech? Why does SPLC devote a paragraph to someone who used NOM's name even though he had no affiliation? . . . SPLC's current management has done extensive damage to the real fight against hate groups by conflating political opponents with violent extremists, by using the hate group and similar lists against mainstream conservative groups and individuals, and by using its past reputation to shape the political landscape.

Hopefully, with time the public will become aware that SPLC is not what it once was.

Tea Party Groups to GOP: Stay Away From Social Issues, Please | The Atlantic Wire

Tea Party Groups to GOP: Stay Away From Social Issues, Please | The Atlantic Wire
  • A Reckoning Is Coming, agrees Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway. "If the Tea Party wants to remain true to its limited government principles, then it strikes me that the default position would be less government and more personal freedom, whether the issue being dealt with involves economics or so-called 'social issues,'" Mataconis writes. "At some point this unnatural split in the GOP's view on freedom will have to be reconciled."
  • How This Will Likely Play Out  "It is unlikely that McConnell and Boehner will follow that advice," writes Bridgette LaVictoire at the blog Lez Get Real, "because to do so will be to alienate the likes of Tony Perkins of the so-called Family Research Council, Brian Brown over at the National Organization for (Christian) Marriage, and the not really American Family Association. In fact, those people warned that if social issues were thrown by the wayside, they'd go into rebellion." LaVictoire guesses that groups like GOProud will find themselves "sold up the river without a single secondary thought from the anti-LGBT Republicans."

Emboldened by Elections, Christian Right Lashing Out at Gay Community in Biblical Proportions | God Discussion

Forget about the economy.  Now that the mid-term elections are over, the religious right and the conservative majorities are eying up what's easiest to "fix" … tapping into religious sentiment to make sure that gays and lesbians are not treated equally under the law.

Reversing Gay Marriage Rights.

A group called "Cornerstone Action" thinks that it has a good chance of overturning marriage equality in New Hampshire.  The group's executive director, Kevin Smith, told the American Family Association's news service,
"I think there's no doubt we'll get majority votes in both chambers to pass it," Smith suggests. "We expect the governor will veto any repeal of same-sex marriage. But then it comes down to getting enough of the majority to override it, and I think there is a pretty good chance that we'll be able to override his veto."
They may not pull off, but there are rumblings in Iowa about banning same sex marriage, now that three Supreme Court justices were not retained.  From Iowa Family Policy Center READ MORE AT :Emboldened by Elections, Christian Right Lashing Out at Gay Community in Biblical Proportions | God Discussion
