O'Brien, 59, is an attorney who was just elected to his third term in the House. Much of his support comes from the right wing of the GOP. He serves as co-chair of the conservative House Republican Alliance. He also had the endorsement of the Republican Liberty Alliance of New Hampshire.
During his first four years in the House, O'Brien pushed for reform of ethics laws for public officials; constitutional amendment to reform education funding; reforms and changes in the state's right-to-know law.
O'Brien opposed gay marriage and what he called the "unneeded and dangerous" bathroom bill on transgender rights.
He has sponsored two bills that would allow use of the death penalty for murders committed during home invasions.
Items on the HRA agenda this year include tax cuts, tax credits for home and private schooling, repeal of gay marriage, passage of a parental notification act, tougher immigration enforcement and joining a lawsuit to block federal healthcare reform.O'Brien gets GOP nomination for Speaker of the House - Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010
