Calling it “surprising,” the New York Times reports, “The bishops also signaled that their conference will move in a decidedly conservative direction in their choice of a vice president. They elected Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, who is chairman of the bishops committee on marriage and an outspoken opponent of same-sex marriage. The runner-up for vice president was Archbishop Charles J. Obama and Crisis
President Obama inherited multiple crises when he took office in January. Today, the New York Times speaks about the link to economic recession which is vital for the new administration. But this connection of the presidency with hard times also carries attendant risks: That the Democrats might come to be viewed as merely manipulating this crisis to their own big government ends. That their agenda was lurking there, waiting to pounce on just such an opportunity, has of course been a common complaint from the right for some time.
Tonight, Chris Matthews' Hard Ball will examine the feasibility of universal healthcare. This issue is a sticking point and the bipartisan comraderie breaks down here predictably.

Irritated by New York Times, Obama Well Within His Rights
President Obama seemed to show some irritation while being grilled about his (apparent) leaning toward Socialism by New York Times journalists on Air Force One. I think he was well within his rights to do so. The times we are in call naturally for government solution and a restructuring of much, if not most, of the social order. The situation has evolved naturally. One need not be pro-socialism to understand that cooler winds are blowing.
I think it is the collectivism and populism which frightens. But much that is temporarily necessary frightens in this life. Much that is involved with transition terrifies. I recall Howe and Strauss stating a dozen years back that the fourth turning would scare many: Precisely due to this intrusion of government, feelings of claustrophobia were certain to break out. But complaining about something does not alter the necessity of it; it only makes it harder to experience the positive aspects, and well nigh impossible to gain any advantages from the situation.
Obama arose from the '90s as a shoot from a plant. As Hamlet said, ( and I quote him because surely Obama is having to dissemble as did the Danish Prince): "Chameleon like, I eat the air, you cannot feed capons so.". To quote the Royal Dane further ( and of course I must transpose a bit): Obama is only socialist north by northwest. When the wind is southernly, he knows a hawk from a handsaw.

Barack Obama goes beyond charisma, and 8 years of Bush-Cheney delivered him to the Democrats' door. In retrospect, Bush may have been the best thing to happen to the Democrats in our lifetime: He destroyed the GOP, and set it back decades. Our national reputation in Great Britain and in Europe has been cleansed and restored. Barack Obama is not only young, handsome, sexy, vital, and a profoundly talented orator: He has substance, courage, idealsim, and the administrative skill to implementation, and the character to stand behind his decisions.
